I Just Felt Like Running

Wednesday night I ran 9.75 miles.

When I’ve told people this I’ve been getting these two responses:

  1. Wow! Good for you.
  2. What you couldn’t run 10 miles?

Shoulder Pain

For the past couple of days my shoulder has really been bothering me. It usually flairs up when I start running a lot. For some reason the muscles just get really tight and I end up in a lot of pain. I normally cope with this by icing it and taking a lot of Advil until it goes away. It’s a crappy system, but it’s all I got.

Monday night however the shoulder was really killing me and I asked the roommate if she wouldn’t mind working on it. Within the first couple of seconds the roommate made it very apparent that she is indeed a PHYSICAL therapist. By no means could you consider this a gentle massage. Actually I may have cried a little as I laid there in agony while she worked my shoulder digging out knots and loosening up muscles.

Even though the roommate made me scream a bit like a girl, I have to say that it was absolutely worth it. My shoulder feels almost 100% better in only a day.

I Thought A 10k Would Be Fun

Training, What's Been Going On / No Comments

A few weeks ago I realized that my running was seriously slacking. It was then that I decided to run in the Fourth of July Music City 10K.

Since I’ve got two half-marathons and a handful of 5ks under my belt, I was eager to actually try a 10k (6.2 miles) for a change. However, I wasn’t really in the kind of shape I needed to be in to run a 10k. So I started training. At first everything was going great. There’s a greenway next to my office building and it was a wonderful place to run after work, until this 90 plus degree heat came. Then I started waiting until later in the evening and running by my house. In addition the normal problems that arise from running at 8:00 at night, the main drawback to the roads I run on, while sidewalked, is that they are very heavily traveled and are pretty unpleasant. Also, last night I was introduced to the worst possible running hazard of them all; a dead deer carcass that I practically had to jump over.

Needless to say, I think I’m giving up the training outdoors for now. Starting today, I’m going back to the treadmill. I may run outside here and there, but until I know that the deer has been removed, you can forget it. Blah!

Running Running

Since I’ve decided to run the Country Music Half-Marathon again this year, I’ve slowly been trying to get back into my running routine. What I’ve discovered is that mentally I still believe that I can go out there and just run four miles with no problem. However physically this is simply not the case. To be honest I’ve been kind of struggling.

Oh well, no worries. I know the secret to running is just to do it everyday. While it sucks for the first week or two, after that you literally get addicted to it and it just sucks not to do it.

I can’t wait until I’m addicted again!

Another Training Update

I realized today while I was running that my allergy medicine really dries me out. I also realized that being dried out while running on hot days is a bad idea. Needless to say, it wasn’t a run I’m very proud about.

Only five more weeks from yesterday until the half-marathon. I’ve still got quite a bit of training ahead of me. Also, I’m going to try my best to drop ten pounds in that five weeks. I think I’ll be able to do it as long as I can stay away from those chocolate milk shakes from Sonic. Damn you Sonic milk shakes and your deliciousness! Damn you!

Wouldn’t It Be Faster If I Just Drove

I ran 6 miles today. My knees hurt.

I’m planning on going for 7 this weekend.

Blah!

An Update On My Half-Marathon Training

Yesterday I ran 3.54 miles. Today I’m going for 4. While this may not seem like a lot since I’m planning on running 13.1 in a half-marathon at the end of April, I feel like I’m making some serious progress (I have only been training now for two weeks). Since my back injury and having terrible cold kept me from running for several months, I felt like I was almost to the point where I was about to have to completely start over.

While things are going well I haven’t gotten to the point with my running where my body just relaxes. As odd as that sounds, I realized last year while I was training that all of a sudden I really enjoyed running and I found it very refreshing. Suddenly 6, 7 miles were easily chalked up without a second thought. My body just kind of went with it and my mind let go. It’s hard to explain without actually experiencing it, but it’s pretty awesome. Right now however I’m still working though the “fighting stage”, where just have to push through it (It kind of sucks).
