Flakes And Scabs

Last Friday I went to Bank of America to close some old accounts. The seemingly normal gentleman who helped me was named Flake.

Seriously, his name was Flake. I got his card and everything.

Having always had the negative connotation of flake stuck to my name, I was blown away that someone would name their kid that. Honestly it bothered me so much I actually pondered other not so bad words that have a negative nuance that would be a terrible name for your kid. The only other one I could come up with is scab.

I wonder if Flake has a brother named Scab.

A New Book

What's Been Going On / No Comments

Sunday, I started a new book. It’s called Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell. This is actually the second time that I’ve started this book. The first time I made it all the way into chapter 3 before putting it down. I just couldn’t get into it and it’s not really an easy read. This time however, it’s going much better. Hopefully I’ll get it finished by sometime next month, although I seriously doubt it. I’m bad about setting a book down for awhile and then picking it up weeks later.

Not A Good Start

Grad School / 4 Comments

Last week I took my first test of grad school.

I studied for an hour or so each night the entire week before. I made tons of note cards. I reviewed the homework several times. I was pretty prepared.

However, after taking the test I left the class feeling like I had flat out failed it.

I was unsure of the multiple choice. I struggled with the short answer. I took a ridiculous amount of time to work the first of two questions which were worth 50% of the test; I DIDN’T EVEN FINISH THE LAST QUESTION. I just ran out of time.

I was pretty bummed about it. I genuinely questioned whether grad school was really such a good idea… It’s kind of hard.

Then last night, we got our grades back.

Turns out, all my worrying and being bummed was for nothing. I ended up making a C.

I guess my teacher realizes his tests are ridiculously hard, and gives points for being mostly right, kind of right, and even some for, at least you tried.

Also, he talked about possibly curving the grades a little bit because everyone did so badly. Who knows, I might even come out with a B.

White People Stereotypes Are Funny

Good Things / 1 Comment

Sometimes things come along that just amuse the crap out of me.

Yesterday I found one of those things.

Stuffwhitepeoplelike.org is the funniest website I’ve ever read. The premise is that it provides instructions for a minority on how to interact with white people and be accepted and/or to be thought of as cool. While I don’t fit into everything they say about white people, I am probably in the 95th percentile.

What can I say, I listen to NPR, I do make mental notes to look stuff up later, I like swimming in lakes, and I do have a gross story about someone pooping in said lakes.

Smart Cat

It turns out that my cat is actually a pretty good study partner. I make note cards and then read them to her as I’m trying to memorize them. So far it seems that she kind of enjoys learning about Accounting and Business Decisions. Then again, maybe she just likes the attention.

Maybe It’s Me

Gheez, Not So Good News / 2 Comments

Yesterday morning was kind of dreary. There was a light rain falling as I was driving to work, and sure enough, since it was Monday, there was quite a lot of traffic. In case you’ve never driven in rush hour traffic in Nashville, the important thing for you to know is that Nashvillians freak out when it rains and loose any and all ability to drive like normal human beings.

Sure enough as I was entering the on ramp to I440 from I65 the person in front of obviously wasn’t paying attention and had to slam on their brakes really hard. This in turn caused me to have to slam on my breaks really hard. Unfortunately, the girl behind me missed the the memo that we were all slamming on our breaks really hard and decided to slam into me instead.

Normally this really wouldn’t have been that bad because, Normally, I would have been driving Purp McGurt, my purple sunfire that has 180,000+ miles and has seen better days in the looks department. However, since very few things normal ever happen to me, it turns out that I was driving my new Montero Sport that I had literally just made the first payment on that day. The reason I wasn’t driving the purple car is because my friend Manish actually wrecked his car last week and his insurance doesn’t cover rental cars. Since I’m a “balla” and have two cars, I decided I’d help him out.

Looking on the bright side, the woman had insurance and they’re taking care of me. Plus I didn’t get hurt like last time so I’m sure all will be well.

Well after three solid months of rocking the beard, I finally decided to shave it off.
